RightCount WI Chair Jim Steineke Responds to MN Political Violence

Milwaukee, WI – Following the horrific murder of former Minnesota Speaker Melissa Hortman, her husband, and the attempted assassination of Senator John Hoffman and his wife, RightCount Wisconsin Chair Jim Steineke released the following statement:

“Today, the RightCount family joins the rest of the nation in solidarity with the people of Minnesota as we mourn the loss of Speaker Emerita Melissa Hortman and her husband, Mark, and pray for the swift recovery of Senator John Hoffman and his wife, Yvette. Our thoughts and prayers remain with their families, friends, and colleagues during this time of tragedy.”

“Reports of the targeted shootings are horrific acts of political violence. As a former legislator myself, I know the weight and responsibility that comes with public service, and I know the commitment it requires from not just elected officials, but their families as well. No one should ever fear for their life because they chose to serve their community.

“In America, we resolve our differences through debate, elections, and the rule of law, not through intimidation. The fact that this was a politically-motivated attack makes it all the more abhorrent. As we learn more about these attacks, we must stand against threats and disinformation that raise the temperature in our political discourse, regardless of the partisan leanings of the source.”
