PRESS RELEASE: Former Governor Pat McCrory Condemns Senate Bill 382, Urges Legislature to “Stop Playing Games with the Administration of Elections”
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
November 21, 2024
Raleigh, NC – RightCount North Carolina Chair and former Governor Pat McCrory today issued a strong rebuke of Senate Bill 382, which combines Hurricane Helene disaster relief with controversial provisions that strip key powers from the governor and undermine voter confidence in elections.
“The majority of North Carolinians, including me, voted for the state auditor-elect to investigate waste, fraud, and abuse in state government— not appoint the Board of Elections. Both political parties should stop playing games with the administration of elections, which shakes the confidence of voters in our voting system,” former Governor McCrory said.
Senate Bill 382, which was fast-tracked through the General Assembly, passed the state Senate 30-19 and the House 63-46 along party lines. The bill contains Hurricane Helene relief and provisions that would strip the governor of the authority to appoint members to the State Board of Elections. The bill, which now awaits Governor Roy Cooper’s signature or veto, is expected to face significant opposition. Governor Cooper has signaled his intent to veto the legislation, which would then return to the General Assembly for a potential override vote in the days ahead.
