ICYMI: Steineke Says Trust in Elections is a Bipartisan Problem

MILWAUKEE, Wisc. — In case you missed it, Jim Steineke, the Chairman of the Wisconsin chapter of RightCount, joined WisPolitics’ Podcast, “Capitol Chats,” to talk about the importance of election integrity.

During the interview, Steineke, a former Majority Leader of the State Assembly, highlighted one of the additional measures that RightCount supports to instill trust in the process. “The Monday processing bill is a big part of that. You know, we’ve seen an election after election, people are confused because they go to bed with one set of numbers that they’ve heard reported, and then the next morning comes, and they hear about this massive swing in the vote totals,” Steineke told Kate Morton on the podcast. “And really what that boils down to is just the fact that we don’t allow these clerks to process ballots prior to election day, and by processing them, we’re not tabulating, we’re not counting, we’re advocating for them to be able to process the envelopes to make sure that they’re ready for count on election day, to help speed up the process and get The vote totals in sooner.”

A recent poll conducted by RightCount ahead of the spring elections found that among Republicans, 67% of Wisconsinites believe that allowing the processing and tabulation of ballots on the Monday before elections would, at some level, be an effective safeguard for mail-in ballots.

Steineke left listeners with opportunities they could take advantage of to see for themselves how Wisconsin Elections are run.

“I would encourage anybody who has even a little doubt in their mind about the security of elections to sign up to be a poll watcher. Go down and watch the public tests of the machines you know, get involved, and see firsthand. Instead of listening to all the nonsense on social media, which we all know is full of misinformation, get out there and see it for yourself, and then talk to your neighbors about what you saw and why you believe elections are safe and secure here in the state.”
